Federal judge issues restraining order blocking N.J. law allowing legal betting on sporting events 6j6z6k27 October 2014ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- Reuters and other news organizations reported late Friday afternoon that U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp issued a temporary restraining order on Friday blocking a New Jersey law that would allow legal betting on sporting events. The Reuters report states that the National Football League and other sports leagues sued last Monday in an attempt to block the law, which New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie had signed several days earlier. The law allows sports betting at state-licensed casinos and racetracks. The sports leagues said it violated a federal sports gambling ban and argued they would suffer irreparable harm if the law went into effect. Monmouth Park, which has partnered with William Hill, had planned to offer the opportunity to bet on Sunday's NFL games, but the the restraining order prevented the racetrack from offering sanctioned sports betting. A Christie spokesperson said New Jersey plans to continue fighting the lawsuit. < Gaming News 6i422i |
